Sprouts Farmers Market plans to open a third store in Chandler, in the southeast area of the city.

The Chandler City Council June 11 approved plans for a new neighborhood shopping center at the southeast corner of Gilbert and Ocotillo roads that would be anchored by Sprouts and include several other retail and restaurant spots.

The development, which would be called The Plant, will be built on eight acres that are part of a larger, 18-acre parcel that previously had been eyed for a development approved by the city. Those plans since were revamped.

The city plans to make improvements along Ocotillo Road in that area, said R.J. Zeder, the city’s transportation and development director. In addition, plans call for access into the shopping center for both right and left-turns through a median.

Council members generally supported the plan with the stipulation that larger vegetation be included as a buffer. It passed on a 7-0 vote. The council also approved a liquor license recommendation for the Sprouts store.

Sprouts, which is headquartered in Phoenix, operates about 200 stores in 13 states, including 29 in Arizona, two of them in Chandler, according to the company website. One of the Chandler stores, at Dobson and Ray roads, opened in 2002 and was the company’s first location.
